ORLANDO, Fla. — Hundreds of drones lit up the sky at Disney Springs for a new holiday show that can only be seen in Central Florida.
Disney kicked off the Starbright Holidays Showcase just after dark Wednesday night and guests got to see the light show for free.
The show was a total surprise for guests.
In the Starbright Holidays Showcase, 300 drones give guests a three-dimensional experience in the sky.
The drones take the shape of holiday themes, like Christmas trees, and move to Christmas music.
"It was amazing. It was very magical,” said Djuna Burns, who got to see the show. “It’s Disney. You expect nothing less from Disney.”
Disney officials won't say how drone light show is synchronized, or where the drones are controlled from, only that Imagineers are constantly working on new innovative ideas.
"This was an amazing technology breakthrough here,” said Disney’s marketing strategy manager Andrea Wolowitz.
Many guests said they were impressed by the show.
"It was amazing, the fact that it was just up there and the transformation from one character type to another and the lights. It was beautiful,” said tourist Frank Abednego, who is visiting Orlando from the Virgin Islands.
"There was all kinds of dots and all kinds of different colors, Christmas colors like blue, red, and green. They were all flowing up in the air,” said tourist Alyssa Calttenburg, who is visiting from Canada.
Channel 9’s Lauren Seabrook asked Disney officials what the payoff was for an elaborate and expensive use of technology.
“We’re just always trying to wow,” said Wolowitz.
Disney wouldn't say which nights guests can expect to see the Starbright Holidays Showcase, but it will continue through Christmas.
