911 call describes scene when SeaWorld's Sky Tower got stuck

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A SeaWorld ride is still closed after it got stuck halfway through the air with passengers on board Monday.

There were 50 people and two park workers on the Sky Tower ride when it malfunctioned as the capsule came down.

Park officials are still working to figure out what went wrong.

A park employee was the one who alerted first responders to the problem on board the ride.

“Our Sky Tower is stuck halfway up in the air,” the caller told the 911 dispatcher. “There are about 50 people with two team members up inside the capsule.”

The caller said one guest was having a panic attack.

First responders sent a firefighter up in a metal bucket to check for any medical problems among passengers.

“There was one woman on the upper floor who we could hear on the talk over on the walkie-talkie. They said have her raise her arms and have her breathe,” said Michael Moffat, who was one of the 50 park guests on the ride.

Other than the woman having a panic attack, all the riders were OK, park officials said.

“These things happen. It’s a mechanical rise and these things happen do I understand their situation. It’s rough being on vacation and having to deal with it, but we made the best of it,” said Moffat.

A SeaWorld representative said there’s no estimate on when the Sky Tower will reopen.
