Anglers invited to shape future African pompano harvest rules

Public workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, and Monday, October 12, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission invites both commercial and recreational anglers to provide their opinions on potential modifications to the regulations governing African pompano harvests.

FWC will hold two virtual public workshops to collect feedback that will be shared with commissioners as they consider potential management changes for the species.

The workshops are scheduled for:

Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time

Monday, Oct. 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time

People can join either webinar on the day of the meeting here.

African pompano are currently subject to a 24-inch minimum fork-length requirement. Recreational anglers may keep up to two fish per person per day, with no more than two fish allowed per vessel; the season is open year-round.

Commercial harvest is also limited to two fish per person or vessel, whichever is less. FWC lists hook-and-line as the only permitted gear in state waters, while federal waters rules allow hook-and-line fishing and spearing.

FWC said recordings of the workshops will be posted afterward on its Saltwater YouTube channel. Those unable to attend can also submit comments online through MyFWC.com/Marine.

Visitors should select “Rulemaking: Submit a Comment/Attend a Workshop” in the site’s “Get Involved” section.

FWC staff plan to bring recommended final rules to the commission for consideration at its March 2027 meeting.
