Animal rights activists to protest 'Shamu' float at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

NEW YORK — Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is getting backlash from animal rights activists who said they don't like the parade's Shamu float.

Nearly 80,000 people have sent letters to SeaWorld, and activists said they are planning to line the route of next week's parade to protest.

PETA organized the campaign, which stemmed from the new documentary, "Blackfish," which accuses SeaWorld of mistreating its whales.

The float flap threatens to shake Macy's traditional position of staying out of politics and soaring above the fray with massive balloons of Snoopy, Kermit the Frog and others.

Macy's issued a statement saying the mission of the parade is "entertainment."
