Man arrested, accused of beating homeless man to death in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — A 62-year-old man was arrested and charged with battery and first-degree murder after allegedly killing Crawford Lewis, 65, over the weekend.

Alonzo Green was arrested Monday on a charge of battery on a person older than 65, the Orlando Police Department said.

The medical examiner determined Lewis’ death was a homicide and police subsequently charged Green with first-degree murder.

Lewis’ battered body was found at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday outside a vacant storefront on South Orange Avenue, north of West Michigan Street, police said.

Police said Lewis was beaten with a wooden board that had a nail sticking out of the end.

Green told someone the morning of Lewis’ killing that he thought Lewis had stolen his cart used for to carry supplied for detailing cars, police said.

The unidentified person told police that after the killing, Green said, “I found the guy and I beat him up really badly. He’s probably dead.”

Migdalia Pagan from New Vision Ministry does outreach for the homeless, providing meals during the week. He said violence is a sad reality for those living on the streets.

“It’s been 10 years in ministry and I’ve seen a lot of these homeless people snap and either end it all or someone else’s life,” said Pagan.

Police said it turns out Green’s cart wasn’t stolen. He has no criminal record in Florida.

Green was being held at the Orange County Jail without bond.
