CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — As the International Space Station speeds through space at more than 17,000 mph, two astronauts will be stepping outside Friday to install the first of two docking adapters.

The spacewalk, which is scheduled to begin at 8:05 a.m., will be the fourth for Cmdr. Jeff Williams and the first for flight engineer Kate Rubins.

The adapter was launched from Cape Canaveral on July 20 and in preparation for its installation, NASA ground crews used the ISS robotic arm to move it into position.

The 42-inch-tall adapter will create a port on the ISS for spacecraft bringing astronauts to the station in the future, NASA said.
