Bartow student accused of blowing up bottle

BARTOW, Fla. — Officials say a 16-year-old Bartow High School student is accused of detonating a bottle of explosive materials on school grounds.

No one was hurt in the Monday morning incident. Principal Ron Pritchard says no school property was damaged.

The girl has been charged with making, possessing or discharging a destructive device and with possessing or discharging weapons on school property.

The Ledger of Lakeland reports the student told authorities she was conducting a science experiment. But Bartow police say teachers told them they didn't know anything about the experiment.

Police say household materials were used to create the explosion.

The principal says the student was close by when the bottle exploded. She was taken to the office, where police took her into custody
