Officials: Boy says Instagram threat to schools was joke

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A 14-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly threatened to shoot up his school on Instagram.

Investigators said Brandon Cordova posted a comment on Instagram Aug. 10 in reference to shooting up Lake Minneola and South Lake high schools.

They said he posted a picture of a teenager accused in an Ohio school shooting holding two handguns and commented, “Someone bring me a charger or I’m shooting up South Lake High School on the first day of school, you have been warned Clermont.”

Another student saw the post and emailed the school, asking that something be done.

The principal called law enforcement and detectives were able to identify Instagram user KidKordova as Cordova.

He told investigators it was a joke.

"We don't know and that's one of those things where kind of… I don't know that you'd call it trivial, but what deputies focused on is that he mentioned these two schools. We don't know what the frustration was, but I will say that his mother was very cooperative with deputies and she understood the severity of this as well," said Sgt. Fred Jones of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Cordova was charged with written threats to kill.

Cordova was placed on home confinement. The school district has not said what officials plan to do about the threat or whether he will be allowed back in school.
