BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Brevard County fisherman told Channel 9 about his scary encounter with an alligator in the Indian River Saturday evening.
Vincent Dewan, 21, is being treated at Wuesthoff Medical Center in Rockledge. He said he was wading about 100 yards in the Indian River behind the Sunrise Landing apartment complex in Port St. John when the incident happened.
Dewan, who was fishing for bait with a cast net at the time, suffered serious hand injuries when he was bitten by the gator.
"Well, he was like 10 feet, so if he rolled, he would have ripped my arm off," said Dewan.
He believes the gator could have weighed more than 650 pounds.
"There's some broken bones, bottom part of my palm is ripped from one side to the other. I have deep puncture wounds all over the top of my hand," said Dewan.
A gator believed to be the one that attacked Dewan was caught by trappers on Sunday. Dewan is expected to make a full recovery.
