Man dies after officer-involved shooting in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Melbourne Police Department is investigating after a man was shot and killed during an officer-involved shooting.

Officers said they were called to The Preserve at Longleaf apartments around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

A caller said two family members were involved in a disturbance, police said.

Investigators said when the first officer arrived at the scene, the man armed himself with a weapon and barricaded himself in a room in the apartment.

The officer called for backup and when the additional officers arrived, the man confronted them while armed with a rifle, police said.

Several officers then fired at the man, who died at the scene, investigators said.

The man has been identified as Richard Kampstra.

The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is department policy.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
