‘Insensitive, distasteful, embarrassing’: Veteran Brevard County lieutenant behind controversial Facebook posts resigns, sheriff says

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Brevard County lieutenant who wrote controversial posts on a police organization’s Facebook page over the weekend resigned Thursday, Sheriff Wayne Ivey said during a news conference Friday morning.

Brevard County Lt. Robert Gamin, who had been with the agency 26 years, resigned when Ivey made it clear to him that he planned to terminate his employment.

Gamin posted on the Brevard County Fraternal Order Of Police’s Facebook page remarks that appeared to invite troubled Minneapolis Buffalo and Atlanta officers to apply for jobs in Florida. Click here to read the full comments.

On Monday, he offered an apology, saying his posts were in poor taste and did not reflect the sentiment that he was trying to convey.

Ivey said the remarks were insensitive and distasteful and brought considerable embarrassment to the agency.

A review of Gamin's personnel file revealed "previous forms of corrective action for statements or comments that were outside the scope of his duties and were specific to either union or political-related activities and views."
