Central Florida sees surge of catalytic converter thefts, data shows

ORLANDO, Fla. — Catalytic converter thefts are a growing issue across the U.S.

Most cars have one, but you’d only know it’s been stolen when you fire up the engine.

They have been a target for thieves for a long time, with numbers almost doubling in Central Florida in the last year.

If yours is taken, it will take time and a lot of money to get a replacement.

It is a crime trend that has only gotten worse as the price of the precious metals inside the converters has increased.

On the global market, platinum was recently trading at $970 per ounce, palladium is $1,330 an ounce and rhodium is $10,000 per ounce.

That means thieves can make up to $1,400 for a hybrid vehicle.

Agencies in Central Florida have seen cases skyrocket.

From 2020 to 2021, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office went from 289 cases to 655.

Lawmakers are trying to stop the thefts with stiffer penalties and stricter rules for scrap yards.

But until then, experts say, try and park in a garage if you have one.
