A 17-year-old bicyclist was nearly hit by a city of Melbourne truck Wednesday, but so far an investigation into the identity of the driver has come up short.
The bicyclist was riding against traffic on Wickham Road near Harper Road Wednesday morning when he encountered a truck with a city of Melbourne emblem, police said. He had to jump off his bicycle to safety. The cyclist was not injured but his bicycle was hit by the truck.
Police have not identified the driver of the truck and don’t know if he or she knew there was a collision. The accident happened near the city garage, which houses numerous vehicles from different departments.
Police are not sure if there was any damage done to the truck, which could make identifying it much more difficult.
The driver may not face charges in the case, especially if he or she didn’t know there had been an accident, police said.
“That doesn’t mean we aren’t going to make a diligent effort to find out who it was,” said Melbourne Police Sgt. Marty Miller.
