Cocoa residents waiting to learn cause of explosion

COCOA, Fla. — An unexplained explosion at an apartment complex in Cocoa flooded the 911 center with calls Saturday night, police said.

Around the Cocoa Village section of the city people are still talking about the explosion on Oak Street.

"A bomb, that's what it sounded like," visitor Joel Cechvala said.

"There was just a big explosion. There's a lot of smoke," one caller told 911 dispatchers.

"OK, we're taking multiple 911 calls. Stand by all units," the dispatcher is heard saying in the call.

"I saw all this smoke coming out , and it smelled like gun powder, and a few minutes later, we had like nine police patrol cars over here," Cocoa Village resident Alberto Menendez.

Menendez said he also saw a dark colored vehicle speed away from the apartment complex where he heard the explosion.

Cocoa police wouldn't say if they believe anyone was targeted in the explosion. Investigators took soil samples and other evidence from around the scene of the blast. They said they are awaiting lab results.

"It's completely out of the norm," said Menendez. "I'd love to know what went down there."

Police said the blast shattered a window of the apartment complex and broke tree branches. No one was injured in the explosion.

A group of area residents will meet Thursday evening to talk about the explosion and learn what police are doing to find who did it. The meeting is being held by Cocoa Mayor Henry Parrish.
