Commissioner works to make sure Osceola Co. ready if gay marriage ban lifted

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — An Osceola County commissioner is working to make sure her county is ready if the ban on gay marriage in Florida is lifted in January.

Cheryl Grieb was sworn in on Nov. 18 and is the first openly gay female Osceola County commissioner.

"I have a partner. We've been together for over 22 years," Grieb said.

Grieb said she wants to make sure that if the ban on gay marriage in the state is lifted on Jan. 5, the doors at the courthouse will be open to accept applications for same-sex marriage.

"This is a huge, historic event," Grieb said.

Grieb is wasting no time gaining support. U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson is on board and sent a letter to the Osceola County Commission urging them to take action and make sure the courthouse is open at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 6.

It is an issue that has both supporters and detractors in the county.

"Everybody has their right -- a man and a woman," one resident told Channel 9 reporter Kristyn Caddell.

"Two men married – I'm against," another resident told Caddell.

If all goes as she plans, Grieb said she will be the first in line Jan. 6.
