Community helps girl, mom heal after fatal shooting

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Nearly a year after her father fatally shot her two older siblings in their Port Orange home, a 10-year-old girl is on the mend.

David Mohney also shot 10-year-old Lauren Mohney before killing himself during an argument with his wife, Cynthia Mohney, last October.

Cynthia Mohney fled the house before the shootings.

On Wednesday, the pair attended the dedication of a magnolia tree and plaque at Spruce Creek High School where 14-year-old Savana was a student and cross-country runner. Eleven-year-old David also died.

Cynthia Mohney said Lauren never fails to impress.

Cynthia Mohney said Lauren was shot twice in the head and suffered a stroke. She returned to elementary school in January and finished fourth grade. She said the community helped them pull through the tragedy.
