Congress continues debate over second round of stimulus checks

WASHINGTON — We could be seeing another round of stimulus checks, which could amount to $1,200 each for many Americans.

But it will likely take some time before it happens because Republicans and Democrats still need to agree on a final deal.

There are less than two weeks left before Congress goes into recess for a month. Lawmakers will have to come to an agreement before then in order for any stimulus money to be sent out in the next few weeks.

Lawmakers are inching closer to an agreement for a second round of coronavirus relief aid, four months after the first coronavirus aid package was passed.

But this time around, it's taking a lot longer for Democrats and Republicans to reach an agreement.

Democrats passed their proposal, called the Heroes Act, 2 1/2 months ago, but it was rejected by Republicans.

Now GOP lawmakers say they have to come up with their own plan. If it passes, the Trump administration said the new stimulus checks would go out in August.

But here's what needs to happen to get to that point.

Senate Republicans and House Democrats will need to agree on a deal to pass legislation for the president to sign into law.

We know after the first coronavirus relief bill, it took about 2 1/2 weeks after being signed that the first stimulus checks were directly deposited into bank accounts.

Both Democrats and Republicans have proposed sending out more $1,200 stimulus checks.

But a major point of contention sits with the unemployment benefits.

Democrats want to extend the additional $600 a week that was passed through the CARES act and expired over the weekend.

Republicans have said that discourages people from getting back to work, and they're calling for a smaller amount based on the person's prior wages.

The latest proposal also includes more funding for schools and loans to help small businesses.
