Davenport man killed after being hit by Amtrak train

DAVENPORT, Fla. — A man walking on a train track in Davenport was hit and killed by a passenger train, authorities said.

The Miami-bound Amtrak train was traveling at 50 miles per hour Monday when the conductor spotted the man walking ahead on the tracks.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office reports that the conductor blew the train's horn and applied the brakes, but the train was unable to stop in time.

A sheriff's spokeswoman said the man didn't appear to acknowledge the approaching train.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not been released.
