Investigators say 27-year-old Emily Piccininni called 911 Friday night to report that the infant was having a medical issue.

According to police, Piccininni described the baby as “twitching” or possibly having “colic issues.”

Piccininni drove the child to the hospital herself where it was learned he had a fractured skull and a brain bleed.

He was transferred to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando where he still remains.

According to police, nurses at the time told the Department of Children and Families that the baby wouldn’t survive beyond “a few hours” more.

An Arnold Palmer nurse later characterized the boy’s injuries for police as “abusive head trauma” commonly caused by shaken baby syndrome.

The nurse told police he had approximately five different brain bleeds, a fractured skull, and was hemorrhaging behind his eyes. The nurse also said the injuries would have to have happened within 48-hours of when the boy was admitted to the hospital.

Based on their investigation, detectives determined Piccininni was the only person who could have been with the infant when he sustained his injuries.

Police secured a warrant for Piccininni for aggravated child abuse and took her into custody Tuesday as she was being released from Halifax Hospital.
