DeLand man falls 40 feet through skylight, dies

DeLAND, Fla. — A 56-year-old man died Thursday after falling through a skylight while working on a roof in DeLand.

Pedro Ayala was working on the roof of Ball Fabrics along West Arizona Avenue when he fell 40 feet through a skylight about 11:45 a.m., authorities said.

At the time of the accident, at least two co-workers were on the roof with Ayala. Police didn’t say if Ayala was wearing any type of safety harness at the time of the accident.

“They were spread apart on the roof (and) heard a noise and discovered that one of the workers fell through the roof, through a skylight,” said Sgt. Chris Estes.

Detectives from the DeLand Police Department and OSHA are investigating.

Ayala leaves behind children and grandchildren.  Friends said he was a former U.S. Marine and Vietnam veteran.
