Lake County deputies are searching for a man’s vehicle that was taken after he was shot and killed outside a Walmart in Leesburg.
Witnesses told Channel 9 that a gunman shot Mark Estes, 44, then ran from the scene at about 7:15 p.m. Monday on the 2500 block of Citrus Boulevard.
Estes, who was from Lady Lake, was driving a 2011 red Toyota four-door Camry with Florida tag YL 46 X, and has a disability/wheelchair license plate, deputies said.
Deputies later confirmed that the shooting appeared to be drug-related and not a random crime.
Drugs were found at the scene, investigators said.
Eyewitness News did not find any drug charges in Estes’s criminal history.
If the shooting did involve drugs, it would be a surprise, area resident J.T. McCabe said.
"Unfortunately, this area is consistently filled with this kind of stuff," he said. "I live a few blocks away from here, and unfortunately, the drug scene in this area continues to increase, and it happens all the time."
Deputies spent the night at the Walmart combing the scene for any evidence. They said they are reviewing the store's surveillance video.
Investigators say they are looking for at least two people involved in the shooting.
