OCALA, Fla. — A former professional basketball player training to become a sheriff's deputy died after completing an agility test required by the department for new hires, said officials.
A local newspaper reports that Dondre Williams, 37, fell ill Tuesday after passing a series of physical tests that included running, pushups and situps.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office reports that Williams died Wednesday at the hospital.
Williams went to high school in Jacksonville and played basketball at West Virginia State University. After graduation, he played professional basketball in Europe and was a strength coach at the University of Florida from 2008 to 2010.
Williams also created a sports academy to help needy children in Tampa.
Williams' cause of death has not been released.
