WINDERMERE, Fla. — A longtime Hillsborough County deputy sheriff has been suspended without pay after a DUI arrest near Disney Wednesday night.
According to a statement given to troopers, it was Sgt. Timothy Craig’s son who found him after he allegedly ran over a stop sign with his truck, coming to rest on a pedestrian bridge.
“My dad was getting restless inside the apartment when he said he was going for a drive,” Craig’s son told troopers. “An hour-and-a-half later, I called him and he didn’t answer.”
Craig’s son told troopers he found his father on the ground vomiting in the grass near his wrecked truck, according to his statement.
Craig refused to take a breathalyzer test at the scene, which will likely come back to hurt him if the case goes to trial, WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said.
“There are consequences for refusing to take the breath test,” he said. “If you choose to go to trial, the prosecution can introduce your refusal into evidence and argue it’s consciousness of guilt. You didn’t take the breath test because you knew you were drunk.”
Troopers reported finding two bottles of Fireball Whiskey in Craig’s truck.
