APOPKA, Fla. — Officials in Apopka say 19 dollar stores are more than enough, and they seek citizen input on how the city should grow.
The city of Apopka recently distributed a survey to residents, asking what type of development they’d prefer to see in the city.
Apopka resident Jacinta Campell knows what she doesn’t want to see built.
“We have a Family Dollar here, a Dollar Tree here and then a Dollar General up there,” Campell said. “It is too many in one area.”
The proliferation of discount stores helped the city recover from the recession, said Robert Sargent, a city spokesman said.
“Some of the easier, low-hanging fruit development ended up being dollar stores and convenience stores,” Sargent said. “So a lot of those did start developing in recent years as the economy started picking up.”
Those who responded to the survey said they’d like to see more sit-down restaurants and fewer fast-food joints. They said they prefer development that draws higher paying manufacturing and professional jobs, Sargent said.
The city will hold two meetings Oct. 24 to survey residents. Survey results will be presented to commissioners in November.
