Driver in deadly hit-and-run near UCF arrested 10 months later

ORLANDO, Fla. — It’s been nearly one year since a high-speed drunk driving accident killed a young man in a neighborhood near the University of Central Florida.

Greg John was in the front seat when his friend slammed into a tree in the quiet community on Worchester Drive.

The 23-year-old was gravely injured in the crash.

Troopers said the driver left John there to die. He also left three others who were seriously hurt.

Ten months later, the law caught up with Travis Nachman: he was arrested on charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.

Resident Miriam Torres witnessed the crash, and she and her husband were some of the first people on scene.

“It took me a long, long time to get over it,” Torres said. “Now I’m reliving what happened.”

Torres said she tried to rescue the five people inside the car. After she managed to free Nackman, she said he tried to physically stop her from calling 911 before he disappeared into the darkness.

“He took off by foot, he disappeared,” she said.

Torres said he returned to the scene nearly 30 minutes later.

“He came back very clean, with different clothes and with a woman,” she said.

It took some time for deputies to make an arrest because they had to prove Nachman was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.

Investigators said his blood alcohol level was recorded over twice the legal limit.

The 24-year-old will face prison time if convicted in the deadly hit-and-run.

All of the people in the car are from the Tampa Bay area, including the victim.

Nachman posted bond Friday.
