El Niño expected to bring dangerous storms, tornadoes this winter

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A strong El Niño weather system is expected this winter, and Central Florida may see dangerous thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Historically, a strong El Niño paves the way for more severe and faster-moving tornadoes, WFTV meteorologist Rusty McCranie said. Those conditions have proven deadly in the past, he said.

“(The last El Niño) happened so long ago that it’s out of everyone’s minds,” he said. “But we try, as we get into the season, to remind them of that and tell them about the storms that occurred during the last strong El Niño.”

A weather pattern like this happens only every eight or nine years, and most of the storms hit in the overnight hours when people are least prepared, McCranie said.

Knowing what’s coming and being prepared for it are key, he said.
