One of world's largest jet manufacturers is expanding its presence in Brevard County. Embraer just broke ground on a new manufacturing facility in Titusville.
"We've learned at last that we have to diversify. We spent too many years before my time, but too many years, being a NASA town," Titusville Mayor Jim Tulley said. "We didn't learn at the end of Apollo, but we've learned the lesson now."
Embraer, an international jet manufacturer, has already made a major investment in Brevard County and is now breaking ground on a facility for the company's Aero Seating Technologies division. It will be based at Spaceport Commerce Park.
The new facility will design, develop and produce luxury seating and is expected to bring 150 new jobs to the area, with an average wage of $48,000 a year.
"This was highly sought after. It was highly competitive. In fact, they were looking in Arizona. By God, they probably hadChampagne on ice over there. We were able to stop it and say, 'Give us a chance to tell our story,'" said Lynda Weatherman of the Economic Development Commission of Florida's Space Coast.
The North Brevard Economic Development Zone board awarded Embraer $2.5 million to offset the costs of constructing the new facility.
"In addition to our unique position for space , space technology, launch and assembly work, we're also talking about what we can do in aviation, which is a completely different market," Weatherman said.
The Titusville facility should be complete by June 2016, officials said.
