Evacuation order lifted after hazmat situation at water treatment plant in Port Orange

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Firefighters in Volusia County said an evacuation order was issued after a hazardous material incident on Wednesday.

Firefighters said the hazmat incident happened at a water treatment plant at 817 Oak Street.

City officials said a third-party vendor offloaded a chemical into the wrong tank, which raised alarm about a possible hazmat situation.

People southeast of the location were asked to evacuate the area or shelter in place.

The evacuation order was lifted just before noon.

Officials said residents in the area can safely return to their homes.
