‘Everybody was frantic’: Gunfire erupts at busy east Orange County shopping center

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Gunfire broke out Wednesday afternoon at a busy shopping plaza, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies were called shortly before 1:30 p.m. to South Chickasaw Trail and Curry Ford Road.

Although no one was shot, a nearby business had broken glass from the shooting.

Witnesses told Channel 9 that they saw an armed person in the parking lot of a BP gas station shoot five times toward a barber shop.

Brandon Cruz said he had arrived at his job at a nearby cellphone repair store when he noticed the commotion.

“I saw everybody was frantic,” he said. “The people at the barber shop were going nuts.”

Cruz said he saw five fire engines respond to the scene and a woman crying.

“I used to live in Harlem and used to duck behind cars when I got shot (at), but this is new,” he said. “Not in this area.”
