Fairbanks improvement project set to get under way

An improvement project along one of Winter Park's busiest roadways is about to get under way.

Winter Park is home to some of the most desirable properties in Central Florida.

But city leaders believe that drivers don't get that impression of the city when they exit off Interstate 4 at Fairbanks Avenue.

What the 28,000 drivers who drive that section of road see includes an abandon gas station, vacant store fronts and roads in need of repair.

"It's very eclectic," said Jan Wynn.

Wynn co-owns Skycraft Surplus on Fairbanks Ave.

She said it's about time something was done. But she hopes the construction traffic won't hurt her business traffic.

"I think somewhat you always worry about that," said Wynn.

WFTV learned that businesses who will benefit the most from road improvements won't pay into the project.

A third of it will be funded through sewer fees, which businesses in the area don't pay now because they aren't on the city's sewer system. Part of the project will connect them to the system.

From the sidewalks to the street lights, an entire stretch of Fairbanks will get an $8 million face-lift. But transforming the stretch of road will take a lot more than just money.

Commercial real estate agent Joe Hills said it will also take time to change the business landscape.

"I think we're talking a five to seven year window for everything to change because revenues in those businesses need to go up to revamp the properties," said Hills.

A representative for Winter Park said the Fairbanks improvement and sewer project will start In August and will take a year to complete.
