Boy, 17, killed in crash on US 92

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A deadly weekend on central Florida roads led to at least eight people dying in crashes throughout the region.

The latest death was in Volusia County when two cars collided and a 17-year-old boy died Sunday morning.

The crash on International Speedway Boulevard caused the road to shut down for nearly four hours and drivers had to be rerouted.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the driver, 17-year-old Garrett Daugharty, of DeLand, was heading west on US 92 in his Dodge pickup truck when he lost control and swerved off the right side of the road around 8:30 a.m.

Daugharty apparently ovecorrected and cut through the median straight into the eastbound lanes.

He ended up crashing into the front left side of a Chevy pickup truck driven by 41-year-old Jennifer Collins.

Daugharty was trapped in his truck and died, while Collins was rushed to Halifax Medical Center, where she is in critical condition, officers said.

The truck collided just as hundreds of people were heading to the beach.

“It was really, really bad. We were just at a standstill,” said driver Ryan Lafayette.

Lafayette said he eventually took another route around the mess.

“We didn’t get on US 92 because we heard about the accident so we ended up taking I-4,” he said.

Other drivers were forced to turn around after emergency crews closed all the lanes in both directions.
