EUSTIS, Fla. — Pamela Edwards, the woman shot by police following a hit-and-run crash over the weekend, died Monday, according to Lake County Sheriff's Office officials.
Deputies said Edwards, 40, fled the scene after crashing into a van on State Road 44 over the weekend.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Edwards was speeding and lost control as she turned left on the roadway.
As she tried to flee the scene, Edwards spun out of control and hit the other car a second time, according to reports.
Umatilla Police Chief Adam Bolton, who was off duty at the time, was able to followed Edwards two miles to her home on Grant Street, officials said.
"It's a green Mustang or passenger car. He just turned down Getfort," Bolton can be heard telling 911 dispatchers.
"Did you get a tag?" asked the dispatcher.
"It's hard for me to get it because I don't want to get to close. I'm trying to stay kind of far behind because I've got my kids with me," said Bolton.
“He was pretty much giving our dispatchers a play-by-play as he followed the suspect to this residence, watched her get out and go inside,” said Lt. John Herrell.
It’s there where officials said Edwards pulled out a gun and began threatening three investigators.
That’s when at least one of the law enforcement officers shot Edwards, critically injuring her.
Edwards was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she later died.
No deputies or officers were injured in the shooting.
The victims of the hit-and-run were not injured.
Two deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and one Eustis police officer have been placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.
Channel 9 learned Edwards has been arrested numerous times for DUI and driving with a suspended license.
