Sensors could be coming to cars to warn drivers about backseat riders not wearing their seat belts after the number of people buckling up in the backseat has gone down since 2013.
The Federal Government wants to hear from the public and auto industry about the proposal.
A report by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association says more than 800 unbelted backseat riders died in crashes last year.
In many cars, once the ignition is started a sensor will go off if the driver or front passenger isn’t wearing a seat belt.
The government is considering requiring the same technology for the backseat.
The government is getting feedback from the auto industry about the potential change.
Traffic safety groups are also pushing for states to enforce backseat seat belt laws by making it a primary offense.
