ORLANDO, Fla. — A memorial of balloons and flowers was created Thursday near the spot where two young girls were killed in a car crash on Wednesday.
Two sisters were killed and two adults were injured Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle wreck that shut down part of Orange Blossom Trail, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.
The crash happened about 3 p.m. at the intersection of Orange Blossom Trail and Brownell Street.
Kayla Johnson, 10, died at the scene, and Jasmin Johnson, 12, was pronounced dead at Arnold Palmer Hospital.
"They were kids. Joyful kids,” said family friend Barbara Gibbs. “April, I'm praying for you and your kids and your family.”
Troopers said April Gallon, 31, was driving on the north lanes of OBT, and for an unknown reason, she drove into the south lane, colliding with a Cadillac Escalade driven by Clermond Laferriere, 59.
FHP said the front of Laferriere’s Escalade hit the right side of Gallon’s Pontiac. The Pontiac went over a guardrail and landed in a ditch.
"Just based on the crash damage, they were doing the speed limit,” said Lt. Mike Castleberry, of the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers later confirmed that Gallon only has a learner’s permit, and not a license.
A licensed driver over the age of 21 must accompany a permit holder, which was not the case in the crash.
Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol said Gallon may face a fine and get points on her license.
Troopers said neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor, and the crash remains under investigation.
FHP said Gallon and her daughters were wearing seat belts.
Gallon and Laferriere suffered minor injuries.
Gallon’s family told Channel 9 that they lost another family member earlier this month, and now they have to bury two more loved ones.
