FHP: Man killed by semi in hit-and-run

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A tractor-trailer hit and killed a man at the intersection of Landstreet Road and Trussway Boulevard Thursday morning, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said the driver made a left turn onto Trussway Boulevard and hit 53-year-old Vincent Callahan.

As Callahan lay on the ground, the driver struck the man's head and then fled the scene, troopers said.

Troopers said there were about a half-dozen witnesses, including a driver of a tractor-trailer who saw the incident.

"That gentleman was stopped in his truck, waiting to make a left onto Landstreet. He saw what was about to happen. He was hitting his horn and trying to alert the driver of the other tractor-trailer," said Cpl. Kristen Neutzling of the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the fog was thick and visibility was low, but they still wonder how the driver did not notice Callahan was hit.

Witnesses said they saw that the white truck had an "L and S" written on the side.

Officers said that tip led troopers just a few miles away, where they surrounded a truck at L&S Logistics.

"We think we've probably found the vehicle, we just still need to look at everything that we have and to be a little more concrete about what we do have," Neutzling said.

"Has the driver of that vehicle said he went in that sort of a route this morning?" WFTV reporter Steve Barrett asked.

"He did. He did make a delivery there today. Yes. So he was in the area," she replied.

FHP investigators said they are gathering more evidence in a case where they find it difficult to prove the driver knowingly ran Callahan down and drove away.
