BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Reports of a suspicious package briefly shut down the West Melbourne Police Department on Thursday afternoon.
It is the second time in less than two weeks that a suspicious incident has been reported at the police station.
A woman took a package marked "explosives" to the police department, police say. The woman said she didn't know what to do with the box that belonged to a dead relative, so she took it to police.
The bomb squad was called in and they determined a flare-type device used by the railroad industry was inside the box.
"However, in a situation like this, where we don't know what the items are, we have to take precautions," said Capt. Richard Cordeau with the West Melbourne Police Department.
Authorities said that if anyone ever finds a suspicious box or item, don't touch it; leave it alone and call 911.
Update: Bomb squad has secured the items and the PD will be reopened shortly. Items determined to be a flare type device #WMPDPIO
