Florida reports record-breaking 277 deaths linked to coronavirus, nearly 6K new cases

ORLANDO, Fla. — Data released by state health officials Tuesday shows another 277 people have died throughout Florida from illness related to COVID-19.

That’s the highest number of deaths noted in a single day since record-keeping began earlier this year.

The state’s death toll now totals 8,685, according to The Florida Department of Health.

The number of new coronavirus cases reported on Tuesday -- 5,831 -- rose from a day earlier; on Monday, the state reported 4,155 additional positive coronavirus tests, the lowest seen in several weeks.

To date, officials have recorded 542,792 positive tests in Florida.

Sixty-seven of the 277 most recent statewide deaths were recorded in Central Florida, including 17 in Orange County, 13 in Marion County, 12 in Polk County, 11 in Seminole County, six in Brevard County, five in Volusia County, two in Osceola County and one in Sumter County.

Tuesday’s data also showed 29,587 additional negative tests results. The total number of negative results stands at 3,506,483.
