POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — A 20-year-old Florida State University student has died during a trip abroad to Israel.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports Briana McHam, a junior majoring in criminal justice from Pompano Beach, died Tuesday. University officials said McHam was visiting Masada, an ancient fortification atop a rock plateau overlooking the Dead Sea. The school said McHam was found dead after students made a trek to the top of the plateau.
The Israeli news agency Haaretz reported McHam fell more than 25 feet and suffered dehydration due to severe heat.
FSU's International Programs is hosted by the Rabin Center in Jerusalem. Family members said McHam was just beginning her third week of the six-week program.
University officials said they are working closely with local officials to investigate McHam's death.
