Florida surpasses 70,000 COVID-19 cases, over 2,800 deaths, health officials say

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida health officials reported 1,902 new cases of COVID-19 in the state since Thursday.

The state’s total case numbers have now reached 70,971 with 2,877 deaths.

In Central Florida, Orange County again saw another big leap with 95 new cases reported.

On Thursday, Orange County saw its largest jump in COVID-19 cases in more than a month, adding 136 new cases after weeks of stable or decreasing daily numbers.

Seminole County also saw a sizeable jump in positive cases, reporting 36 new positive tests since Wednesday. County officials said case numbers have spiked in recent days, causing concern and increased calls for proper social distancing, hand-washing and wearing of face coverings.

Of the 29 deaths reported Friday, two were in Central Florida: one in Polk County and another in Flagler County.
