Grandson arrested after grandfather found shot to death near Mount Dora home

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A man was arrested on a first-degree murder charge in the death of his 73-year-old grandfather, Orange County authorities said Friday.

Donald Gonnelly was shot to death. His body was found in his home on Frances Ann Court near Mount Dora, deputies said.

Oakley Miller, 19, was arrested at the scene.

"He's always walking the roads and he's just, there's something not right with him. I just had that feeling inside," said neighbor Brenda Hunt.

Deputies said the call came in at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, and they found that his home had been ransacked.

WFTV found out it's not the deputies' first time at the home. WFTV uncovered dozens of calls for service at the west Orange County home. Most of the calls were for medical emergencies, but a few involved Miller.

In 2012, Gonnelly reported that Miller had run away with some guns. Later that year, Miller was showing his dad wrestling moves when his dad stopped breathing. Both called it an accident.

Also, last year, Miller's grandfather told authorities Miller stole his Dodge Ram.

In each case, the family refused to file formal reports.

Neighbors said they did not hear gunshots.

Retired police officer Junior Smith lives across the street.

"I was here all day and saw nothing unusual, which is normal for this street. And, my reaction when I heard it was, 'Well, something happened within the family,'" said Smith.

Detectives said they're not discussing a criminal motive.
