Home gutted by arson now an eyesore for Lake Eola neighborhood residents

ORLANDO, Fla. — People who live in a historic Lake Eola neighborhood that is being targeted by an arsonist said they are furious they're dealing with the damage months later.

In August, an abandoned home on Christor Place may have been connected to a serial arsonist, but eight months later nothing has been done to clean the place up.

Neighbors said the home is an eyesore with windows and doors boarded up. Code Enforcement calls it a public nuisance, but despite the month-old violations, nothing has been done.

"That's the first thing you see, this rubble," said neighbor Gil Rowe.

Rowe's daughter-in-law, who lives next door, posted to Facebook where neighbors sounded off about the nuisance the eyesore home has become.

"We have complained, yes," said Rowe. The code enforcement told us that they're being fined $50 a day since last January, and he's done nothing for it."

Code Enforcement told Channel 9 they've gotten multiple complaints since the fire but said it's a long process for the city to do much more than fine the owner.

"We'd like to have it fixed up or torn down, but you can't tear it down because this is in the historic district," said Rowe. "It's just horrible and to have this kind of a barrier against our garden tour is kind of bad, because we're trying to make Orlando city beautiful."

A Code Enforcement inspector is scheduled to be back at the property on Wednesday. If the owners don't get the issues fixed, they'll be called before the code board, officials said.

Code Enforcement also said it can take a while for insurance to cover the damage from arsons.
