Imam accused of touching teenage girl granted bond

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — The Osceola County imam known as an activist for the Muslim community was granted bond Thursday after he was accused of molesting a 15-year-old girl.

Helmi Agha, 40, is facing 12 lewd and lascivious molestation charges and more charged could be tacked on as the investigation continues.

Investigators said the victim is a 15-year-old girl.

“We received information in late January from the Muslim community that there may have been an inappropriate relationship,” said Twis Lizasuain of the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

The tip led detective to the victim, who knew Agha for several years as the head of the American-Muslim Young Leadership Council.

“She told detectives that in early November she had a fainting spell at the council. She was taken to the imam’s office and he inappropriately touched her. It occurred again several times,” Lizasuain said.

The judge set several conditions on Agha’s $25,000 bond including no contact with the victim or her family, and no unsupervised contact with minors.
