ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement turned over its investigation into a deadly deputy-involved at the Florida Mall over to the state attorney’s office.
Salaythis Melvin was shot in the back outside the Florida Mall in August while running away from a plainclothes deputy who was serving a warrant on another man.
Investigators said Melvin was reaching for a gun in his waistband and turned toward the deputy before the deputy opened fire.
The deputy who pulled the trigger was not assigned a body camera at the time of the shooting.
