Judge grants bond to Seminole County teacher accused of child abuse

Teacher disputes allegations after prosecutors say student was dragged from classroom

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A Seminole County teacher faced a judge Friday on accusations of child abuse.

Investigators said 52-year-old Fada Concepcion dragged a child in her class at least 20 feet, but she tells a different story.

Prosecutors initially requested a $5,000 bond, but that amount was reduced to $1,000. Concepcion was also ordered to have no contact with the alleged victims and was told not to return to Tuskawilla Middle School.

According to investigators, the child abuse charge stems from an incident last Tuesday, Sept. 29, during a third-period class at Tuskawilla Middle School, where Concepcion is a 7th-grade science teacher.

According to investigators, Concepcion grabbed a special needs student out of his seat and dragged him by his arm into an exterior hallway.

Investigators said they interviewed 15 students who were marked present in the science class during third period and obtained surveillance video to corroborate the charge.

During a hearing on Friday, Concepcion visibly disputed the allegations presented by prosecutors, shaking her head as they were read.

Concepcion’s attorney argued there was no probable cause to support child abuse claims, saying the student was misbehaving and wasn’t even hurt.

“My client used the word escorting, the detective used the word drag,” said Concepcion’s attorney. “She basically grabbed the child by the arm and took the student out of the classroom. There’s no indication in this probable cause affidavit that this student was injured in any way.”

Prosecutors disputed those characterizations, and a judge ultimately found there was probable cause that she committed the crime.

A spokesperson for Seminole County Public Schools released the following statement to Channel 9:

“We take all allegations involving our students’ safety and well-being seriously and will respond quickly. This teacher is currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement and the Office of Professional Standards in accordance with district policies and procedures.”

Concepcion’s next court date is scheduled for November 10th at 1:30 pm.
