Kissimmee residents who violate recycling rules could be fined

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Residents who don't follow the recycling rules in Kissimmee could eventually be hit with a fine.

Channel 9 found out that Waste Management is cracking down on people who violate recycling rules.

Amy Boyson, of Waste Management, said the biggest problem is non-recyclable items being put out for recycling.

"In the past few months we've seen foam noodles, TVs, propane tanks, ropes. Hoses are a big one that are not recyclable," Boyson said.

Waste Management has warned residents that if non-recyclable items are left outside, they won't be picked up.

"Again, we don't want this plastic bag," Boyson said.

The overload of non-recyclable items can mess up the company's recycling system, Boyson said.

"We're seeing a lot of it is garbage. Then we have to do a transport to the landfill and pay that disposal fee on top of it," Boyson said.

The company is now having workers manually pick up the recycling bins to check for non-recyclable items.

Kissimmee officials said repeat recycling violators could face an $18 fine.
