CENTRAL FLORIDA — Crooks are invading Central Florida with a scam that claims to help you save money on your electric bill.
The Kissimmee Utility Authority said crooks are claiming they can save big money on your electric bill with a new federal assistance program created by the president.
The multi-state scam uses automated phone calls, door-to-door visits and online.
The thieves ask for personal information, including social security numbers.
"It's happened to my mother and it's terrible, but it is happening,” said Pat Hart, of Key West. “It is kind of scary to think that someone would be willing to commit fraud, basically.”
KUA said it's already been contacted by several customers who've been approached by the scammers in recent days.
If you believe you have been victimized by the scam, KUA has set up a hotline to help. The number is 407-933-9800.
