Marsh fire grows to 105 acres near Silver Eagle Road

GROVELAND, Fla. — A marsh fire burning near Silver Eagle Road in Groveland has grown to about 105 acres, according to the Florida Forest Service.

The fire was first reported at about 25 acres on Wednesday afternoon. The Florida Forest Service’s Withlacoochee Forestry Center and Lake County Fire Rescue are working at the scene.

Officials said one helicopter is in the air and preparing to begin water drops, while a second helicopter is on the way.

Because the fire is burning in marshland, firefighters have limited access to much of the area on foot, making aerial support critical to suppression efforts.

“Drones make it unsafe for helicopters to fly,” the Florida Forest Service said. “If you fly, we can’t.”

Residents are also asked to avoid the area so crews can work safely and have room to respond. No evacuation information or reports of injuries were immediately released.
