Some of those living in New Smyrna Beach are worried that a proposed hotel could ruin their quaint beach town.
Developers want to build a 146-room SpringHill Suites by Marriott along the ocean off of Flagler Avenue.
One of the developers told Channel 9 that the group is optimistic about the plans and has followed all the procedures asked of it by the city.
Local residents said they don't believe the hotel would be a good fit for their city.
Currently the land is zoned for about three dozen rooms.
The developer also wants to build beyond the coastal setback line. Residents said they worry that during a hurricane, like those they lived through in 2004, things could be made worse because of the development.
One resident feared that the developed property could send floodwaters onto neighboring properties.
The proposal will be front and center at a Planning Board meeting Monday night. If it is approved, it would only be the second hotel built in the city in the past two decades.
