PITAZOLA ARRIBA, PAN. — A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck near Pitaloza Arriba off the southern coast of Panama at approximately 1:56 p.m. ET.

The powerful temblor has triggered a broad tsunami threat for several countries spanning Central and South America.

The tsunami threat extends across the eastern Pacific Ocean, where tsunami waves may develop following the seismic event.

The threat applies specifically to the west coasts of Central America, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
