WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — A man accused in a brutal Winter Garden home invasion is on life support after trying to commit suicide in June, WFTV learned on Monday.
Oscar Diaz-Hernandez was under 24-hour surveillance in an isolation cell at the Orange County Jail, but he managed to squeeze into an off-camera spot and hang himself using a bed sheet, authorities said.
According to the jail report, Diaz-Hernandez was revived, but days later, doctors determined he would never recover.
Diaz-Hernandez, 21, is one of four people accused of holding a Winter Garden family hostage in 2009, police said.
Authorities said Diaz-Hernandez is currently at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where his mother is deciding whether to take him off life support.
Diaz-Hernandez is accused of shooting Marcela Morais, who was pregnant, as she tried to run for help after jumping out of a second-floor window.
Morais survived, but she, her husband and their young autistic son, were held hostage by the four attackers for days.
Two of the people involved in the situation were convicted and sentenced to life in prison. The fourth, Bianca dos Santos, who is accused of being the mastermind, is still on the run.
"In my career here in Winter Garden, not too often does this happen," said Lt. Keith Ralston. "We're a nice, small town. Quite and safe community, so this entire event is odd for us."
Diaz-Hernandez learned last week that he his trial was set for Sept. 10.
